Ammo and Power Factor thoughts
Got a question for those that are more experienced than myself ..... Talkin 9mm ammo here only please . Given the 3 popular bullet weights for 9mm - 115, 124 , 147 . and the ruff velocity for each to...

I have about 18 months experience with action shooting. I shoot USPSA Production, not IDPA. I just like reading your boards for the good info here. When I first started reloading, I loaded up a bunch...

I'm torn on this. Physics tells me 125pf is 125pf is 125pf. But empirically I know they do it differently, especially depending on the powder you use. But................ then I load up a mag mixed...

I find the FELT recoil of a 147 gr 9mm to be more comfortable than a lighter, faster bullet. Strangely enough, a 125 gr coated has less APPARENT "pop" to it than a 125 gr jacketed at the same...

I was shooting a Extreme 115 gr plated bullet with a 4.5 gr charge of 700x . Loads are accurate from sand bags and I have a few lbs of that powder I want to use up as its a pretty good 9mm powder ....

My M&P is challenged in the accuracy department, and 147g group best out of my gun. They also have a point of impact consistent with my non-adjustable sights. Groups open up and hit low with 115g....

http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmpf-5.1.cgi I'm using this to determine power factor. Am I on the right track or should I use something else ?

I'm going to put on my Physics Major hat. Power factor is basically momentum. Which if you assume a start from rest, is force times time. Since a heavier bullet is slower to make the same power...

I tend to enjoy shooting the 147gr loads a bit more purely because they seem softer. Ultimately how the load "feels" is not what we should focus on. Let the target tell you what to use, and how...

For me it's more about the impulse. 147 is "easier" for me and 180 40S&W is stupid easier.

Like Vested - I shoot lower with 115gr than I do with 124gr. Knowing the POA/POI is more important than felt recoil.

I used to shoot 124gr plated FMJ. I changed to 147gr JHP. I didn't notice any difference in recoil, but I did notice a huge increase in accuracy.

I like the 124s. I started with 115s (cheaper) but occasionally had trouble with steel not falling after a reasonably square hit. I was going to try 147s but noticed a big (for me) difference in...

Years ago when I shot CZ's almost exclusively Angus Hobdell told me that CZ shot 124/5's better than any other bullet weight. So I settled on that bullet weight. I don't shoot CZ's as much these days...

The 124 grainers certainly should be more accurate out of the 1 - 10 twist rate of the CZ's and I know my experience supports this view. Out of my M&P's with the older 1 - 18 twist I had some...
